Franco Cortinovis was a talented Italian road racer from Milan whose career rose from the youth and amateur ranks into the professional peloton. This 1962 Campionato Italiano Esordienti jersey marked him as a rider of promise, an early national championship success. Cortinovis later confirmed that promise with a strong amateur career, becoming the Italian amateur road champion in 1968 before turning professional. His greatest professional victory came at the 1969 Giro d’Italia, where he won Stage 6 from Follonica to Viterbo, a major result in one of cycling’s grand tours.
The jersey is a beautiful early 1960s Vittore Gainni Italian wool racing jersey, simple, elegant, and full of period character, with short sleeves, a ribbed collar and cuffs, and a front ¼-zip. Sewn to the chest is a small Italian tricolore shield, signifying Cortinovis’s national champion status. Included with the jersey are two period black-and-white photographs, one of which is signed by Franco Cortinovis, along with a handwritten display label from Bar Augusto reading “Franco Cortinovis, Campionato Italiano Esordienti, 1962.” This is a wonderful piece from the early career of a rider who went on to win a stage of the Giro d’Italia.
This jersey includes the original label and 2 photos from Bar Augusto.
This jersey was acquired directly from the Augusto Gotti family and was part of the collection in the legendary Bar Augusto in Villa d’Alme, Italy. Bar Augusto was a key host to professional and amateur cycling teams from the 1960s through the 1980s.
