This scarce image is of an Essex oyster fishing boat is of a traditional wood hulled gaff-cutter rigged boat.
Swift deep keeled boats were used for oyster dredging and fishing along the the shallow creeks and mudflats of the Blackwater estuary surrounding Maldon Essex.
John Sutton was born in 1935 and studied art at Norwich and Brighton schools of Art.
Initially taught art until an art dealer offered him a one man exhibition from which his career became a full time painter.
His work was sold by the Easton Gallery in London exclusively, until the owner died.
A listed Marine and landscape artist whose work is keenly sought and collected.
Latterly he has taken an interest in Edwardian London street scenes.
This image is one of his rarer early prints. 
He lives in Norfolk.
