Ellen Lawless Ternan (1839–1914) – Autograph Letter Signed “E. L. Ternan”, c.1865 Portman Street, London – Theatre Box Request – Strong Dickens Association

A scarce and appealing ALS from Ellen Lawless Ternan, actress and long‑associated companion (mistress?) of Charles Dickens, written from 104 Portman Street, London, and signed in her characteristic hand “E. L. Ternan”. The letter dates from the mid‑1860s, the central period of her private relationship with Dickens, when he was discreetly supporting Ellen and her family and arranging separate accommodation for them within the Portman Square / Marylebone district.

The content is entirely characteristic of this phase of her life: a polite request for a private theatre box on an evening of her choosing. This kind of social‑theatrical activity is well documented in the years when Dickens facilitated Ellen’s movements and maintained her London household. The address, tone, and handwriting align precisely with the period in which Dickens and Ellen were closely connected.

The letter is addressed to Mr. Hackern?. The signature “E. L. Ternan” is the correct mid‑Victorian autograph form used before her marriage in 1876.

Approximate date: c.1864–1868 (safe catalogue date: c.1865). Letter reads:

104 – Portman Street Portman Street Thursday – May 19th My dear Mr. Hackern Will you think me very —— if I request the —— of a private box on some evening this week at the ——.
