Measuring about 5" x 10", this is an original hand drawn pen and ink sketch of a woman wearing what looks to me like a British military combat uniform of the Boer War period. But let's dig a little deeper.

First, I'm describing it as an original drawing - rather than a print - because there are places where you can literally see the original rough pencil outlines under the ink. Second, it is signed "W. Howard 1902" at the lower right corner - presumably the name of the artist and the date of production. Third, I concluded this is a woman and not a man based on the following details - size of waist, amount of curly hair showing under the slouch hat, and the unmanly length of hat ribbon that is flowing free in the wind. And why have I placed it tentatively in the Boer War period? Well, go to this website:

...and scroll down to the image of Robert Baden-Powell in "gauntlets and high British boots." Just add a shoulder-slung bandolier and that's kind of what she's wearing. 

The drawing poses several questions. First, why is a woman wearing a military uniform from a period when women didn't serve in combat roles in the military? And why is she brandishing two guns - a rifle in her right hand and a handgun in her left? Let me know if you have any thoughts, but the first answer I came up with is that it's a fantasy image, perhaps even an early form of pinup art.

In terms of condition, it has some chips and tears around the edges, and the fade pattern around the border suggests it was once framed. On the back - in what looks to be the same handwriting as the "W. Howard" signature - is an inscription that reads "Stan Carr. December 1902."
