WHAT A VERY NICE EXAMPLE OF THE 1st WATERMARK 3d OLIVE KANGAROO VARIETY: "RETOUCH ON FIRST 'A' OF AUSTRALIA" - PLATE POSITION 2L59 2025 ACSC12(2)g - 2025 CV$120 (UNCHANGED for 10+ YEARS)
The 1st Watermark 3d OLIVE KANGAROO was issued in just two printings by J.B. COOKE. These marsupials were supplied to Post Offices on 22 January 1913 and the first known use of the stamp is a cover dated 28 January 1913. They were used as the 'registration fee' and the 'commercial papers rate to foreign countries' of the time. There were two printings in January 1913 and February 1914 totalling 14,440,000 stamps, of which 69,120 were spoilt, leaving 14,330,880 on issue. Many of the 1st Watermark varieties are replicated in the 3rd Watermark (the same plates were used) … however, the 1st Watermark varieties are very much scarcer. The ACSC 12(2)g, for example, carries a 2025 ACSC CV of $120 (unchanged VALUES for 10 years) whereas the 3rd Watermark version 'CVs' at $90. There are only around a dozen varieties listed for the 1st Watermark 3d Olive in THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH SPECIALISTS' CATALOGUE KANGAROOS (ACSC 2025) and this one is described as:
ACSC 12(2)g: "RETOUCH ON FIRST 'A' OF AUSTRALIA" - PLATE POSITION 2L59 (2025 ACSC CV$120).
The variety recurs at 2L59 … that is … it is the 59th STAMP on the LEFT PANE of PLATE 2 (the Lower Plate used for printing the 1st Watermark issue in 1913). This is a very nice example. GOOD PERFORATIONS AND CENTERING with an interesting "KAPUNDA?" SA 1914 Postmark. This one also shows the horizontal watermark line at the back which indicates that the stamp is from the bottom row (L59). The retouch here is very nice and per the ACSC description. The reference scans are from the 2025 ACSC.
