One antique restaurant china platter made by Bauscher for Luehrmanns Restaurant in Memphis, Tennessee. Any items related to Henry Luehrmann and his ventures are highly collected. I have additional pieces from the restaurant I will be listing at a later time.
Henry Luehrmann was a prominent German immigrant who significantly influenced the hospitality and business scene in Memphis during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After serving in the Union Army, he settled in Memphis and amassed wealth as a dealer and bottler of Schlitz Beer. His early success with a local saloon led to the opening of "The Terrace Garden" restaurant, and eventually, his grand hotel and restaurant on Main Street, which operated from 1888 until 1909. Luehrmann's Restaurant was renowned as one of the two premier fine-dining destinations in the city, famously featuring high prices, waiters in tails, 135 varieties of wine, and live lobsters and oysters kept fresh in an artesian well dug into the basement. Beyond his legendary hospitality, Luehrmann was a key civic figure involved with the Pioneer Cotton Mills, First National Bank, and Home Insurance Company.
Fair-minus condition. This is a well used platter. No chips or cracks. It shows heavy utensil scuffing, including gray utensil marks and discoloration, that I was not able to remove with careful cleaning. There is some logo loss and wear to the green band. The base also displays discoloration. Please see the pictures for more information and to help with your decision.
This platter measures 9 3/4" long and 6 1/8" wide.
