A VERY PRETTY 3rd WATERMARK 2/- BROWN KANGAROO VARIETY: “BREAKS IN LINES 5 & 6 BELOW ‘O’ OF POSTAGE & BREAKS LINES 3&4 ABOVE W of TWO" - 2025 ACSC UNLISTED CV$600 (FOR 'OS' VARIETY) IN "BROWNISH GREY" - RECURRING ACROSS BROWN & MAROON 2/- KANGAROOS
The 3rd Watermark 2/- Brown Kangaroo stamp was printed in April 1916 by J.B. COOKE and first issued in May 1916. The T.S. HARRISON printings followed through to the introduction of the 2/- MAROON Kangaroo in 1924. These were printed from two Plates (Plate 1~UPPER & Plate 2~LOWER) each with 120-on in two Panes of 60 each in 10 Horizontal Rows of 6 Stamps. They were used to make-up the higher telegram, parcel and bulk postal charges of the day. There were some 13 printings (three by COOKE and ten by HARRISON) of this issue between April 1916 and March 1923, totalling 13,094,880 stamps. This variety is NOT listed in The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue "KANGAROOS" (ACSC 2025) however, as you can clearly see, there is a distinct and very sharp white flaw (lines 5 & 6 below the ‘O’ of ‘POSTAGE’ and Breaks lines 3 & 4 above 'W' of TWO here with is quite SCARCE but recurring (please note the last scans below for previously found examples. The stamp is very presentable, albeit with a slightly messy postmark. As you can see, it is the BROWNISH GREY with is found in "OS" only. A terrific variety marsupial, for the specialist.
