Celebrated by South Indian Hindus, Golu is a vibrant festival that combines spirituality, community, and the celebration of womanhood.

Golu takes place annually over nine nights and ten days during the Navaratri festival. Meaning "nine nights" in Sanskrit (nava for nine, ratri for nights), Navaratri honors the divine feminine energy, Goddess Shakti, in all her manifestations. The festivities begin on the new moon day of the Hindu month of Purattasi (falling between September and October).

Central to the celebration is the Bommai Golu (meaning "Court of Dolls"), where an expansive array of figurines takes center stage in the home. Because these dolls represent a divine presence, families treat them with immense reverence. A few days before the festival begins, women—who traditionally lead this ritual—carefully retrieve the dolls from storage to arrange them on tiered step displays.

Golu dolls serve as cherished family heirlooms passed down from generation to generation, with some households preserving pieces that are centuries old. To keep the tradition dynamic, families often purchase a few new dolls each year. This continuously expands the collection before it is eventually handed down to the next generation.
