·       The Navy YMCA in Shanghai was located within the Shanghai International Settlement, a historically extraterritorial zone administered by the British and Americans and later a significant center of international trade, culture, and refuge in the city. The settlement was bordered by the Suzhou Creek to the north, the Huangpu River to the east, and the French Concession to the south. After the Japanese attack in December 1941, the settlement was occupied, and the YMCA building itself was seized and later used as a US military club before becoming a sports center under the new Shanghai government.  

The Battle of Shanghai Backdrop  was a major battle fought between the Empire of Japan and the Republic of China in the Chinese city of Shanghai during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It lasted from August 13 to November 26, 1937, and was arguably the single largest and longest battle of the entire war . . . It resulted in the Japanese capture of Shanghai and heavy destruction to the city. . . . this map was just after that timeframe
