Antique 19th Century Top Quality pressed and cut glass inkwell in original condition more or less, this lovely example being without chips, cracks or damages, dings, splits, or repairs.
Featuring some superb chased foliate work to the lid including scrolled acanthus and flower heads the lid is finished with a central roundel cartouche engraved with a crest image in the form of a running Lion holding a Sword, the lid to the inkwell opens via way of thumb screw clasp to the front to reveal a heavy gauge silver mounted housing with ink reservoir below, the inside lid to the inkwell retains original leather seal which is fitted in place with a heavy silver tablet mount and flower head clamping nut, all showing little to no wear or use in its long life.
A magnificent example of the century fully marked for London assay office circa 1861 with the makers mark for John Howes, also present is the Duty mark for Queen Victoria.
The inkwell when closed shut measures 7.5 cm x 3.5 cm x 3.5 cm in dimension.
