The amount of light emitted from a lamp decreases with the age of the lamp, particularly in lamps which emit ultraviolet radiation, so it is important to remember to change your lamps at the end of their recommended service life, normally at 1 year.
UVB lets a reptile make vitamin D3 in its skin, which it needs to absorb calcium for healthy bones and to help prevent metabolic bone disease. Indoor reptiles can’t get this from sunlight through glass, so a UVB lamp does the job.
Match the percentage to your species’ natural habitat: lower outputs (ShadeDweller and Forest 6%) suit shade-dwelling and woodland reptiles, while Desert 12% and Dragon 14% suit open-basking desert species such as bearded dragons. UVB output fades long before the tube stops lighting, so replace it about every 12 months and note the date you fitted it. High-output T5 tubes in heavy use may be worth changing a little sooner.
