I am selling a special piece of Mid-Century pottery!

This item is a covered box by famed artist Marc Bellaire. Marc Bellaire’s work is sometimes confused with that of Sacha Brastoff. However, Mr. Bellaire was a highly successful ceramics artist in his own right. 

He operated his studio in Culver City, California in the 1950’s. His work embodies the forward-thinking look of Mid-Century design, a far cry from the traditional and safe look that had been produced during the previous decades.

This covered box is from the Mardi Gras group. It features a Harlequin costumed figure on the lid dressed in black with bold accents of pink and turquoise. The lid and sides of the box are glazed in black.

The box has a freeform shape. It measures just under 8” at its longest point, is 4 7/8” wide, and 3/4” deep. It is higher at the left end, sloping down to the right end.

The lid is signed

“Bellaire”

below the figure. The bottom is marked

“Bellaire

CALIF.

Mardi Gran B46 S”.

Both the bottom and inside of the lid are marked with the shape number

“24”.

Condition is pristine, nearly mint! There may be a faint surface scuff or two. No sign of use or wear, and no damage at all.
