In Paris, 1523. An important post-incunabulum of Roman civil law, this is the first volume of the Digestum Vetus, one of the central works of Justinian's legislation. The text is based on the Pandects of Emperor Justinian I, the authoritative compilation of Eastern Roman civil law, which influenced European legal thought for centuries. This two-column edition features striking typography, with text in red and black; the legal text itself is centered, surrounded by detailed scholarly commentaries in a smaller typeface. This layout clearly illustrates the practices of legal interpretation in the Early Modern period and, at the same time, makes the work a fundamental document in the history of law.
