WHOOPI GOLDBERG Born in 1955, Goldberg was raised by her single mother in a housing project in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. She began working as a performer in the 1970s, but first became known to most audiences through her 1983 off-Broadway production The Spook Show, which became a sensation in New York, and proved to be a watershed in her career. Mike Nichols was passionate about the show, and brought it to Broadway. In 1985 Goldberg won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for the show. Nichols introduced Goldberg to Steven Spielberg, who cast her as Celie in his 1985 film adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel The Color Purple. The film, and Goldberg's performance, became cultural phenomena. She was nominated for an Academy Award and won her first Golden Globe for best actress, becoming one of the most popular movie stars of the 1980s. Her success as a film actor grew in the 1990s with the blockbusters Sister Act and Ghost, for which she won the 1991 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the second Black woman to win an Oscar. For Ghost, she also won a Golden Globe and the Black Entertainer of the Year Award from the NAACP. Throughout her career, she has appeared in 150 films. In 1992 Goldberg launched her television talk show The Whoopi Goldberg Show, featuring interviews with politicians and celebrities, and in 1998 she began appearing on Hollywood Squares, for which she was nominated for two daytime Emmy Awards. These series lay the groundwork for her enormously successful run as moderator of the daytime talk show The View, beginning in 2007, for which she and her cast shared an Emmy for best talk show host in 2009. The View made Goldberg a leading political and cultural commentator. Goldberg’s political activism began early in her career, and she has been an outspoken advocate for people of color, women, and LGBTQ+ communities. An accomplished author, she has written six non-fiction and seven children’s books. In 2019, she published the lifestyle coffee table book The Unqualified Hostess, which gave fans an inside look at Goldberg’s passion for collecting, curating the design and decoration of her home, and hosting guests.
