Pair of James Mont style Table Lamps 1950's Hollywood Regency Chinoiserie Mid Century
James Mont (1904–1978) was a notorious American mid-century interior designer and furniture maker with a flamboyant life.
I believe these are Mont originals but I can’t be certain.
Many of his authentic pieces and authorized reproductions were unsigned and he catered for both mobsters and Hollywood celebrities alike.
I cannot find any makers marks on these lamps but their original fittings (all General Electric Co.), wiring, lampshade frames etc are in line with those used in America during his design period. However, I am no expert so if this is important to you I kindly request you do your own research for peace of mind.
I still have the original fittings so if you want them I’m happy to send them along with the lights, just let me know.
These lamps work well but they have been retrofitted with UK (CE approved) lamp holders which are not completely compatible in thread size to the original American 1950s ones (a construction issue rather than a wiring one).
I think the original threaded body rod is an imperial 3/8” thread and the lamp holder has a metric female 10mm thread so it’s a fraction big. Both lamp holders are locked off with a grub screw and we’ve never had a problem but I wanted the new owner to know. I don’t think it would be difficult to swap the original 3/8” body rod for a modern 10mm rod, I just never got around to it.
Please note, these will be sent WITHOUT plugs and I would recommend that the lights were checked over by a qualified electrician before use. I’m probably being over cautious but I always think it’s best practice when buying second hand electrical goods. Whether you do or not is of course personal choice.
The picture with them working has been taken to show that the current wiring is intact and working.
Although a pair, each of these lamps are slightly different in so much as weight and small variations in size. It could be that each lamp came from a different batch of brass, which in those days varied both in colour and brightness.
One also has a tiny hole in the brass by the base and couple of areas which look like minor casting defects (please see photos). You have to look pretty close but I’d rather point them out.
Approx measurements:
H 27" & 26.5" (inc lampshade frame)
W 6.5" - both (base)
Weight 4760g & 4506g
These items are vintage and come with a history, so will have wear commensurate to their age. The listing is done to the best of my knowledge so please do take care to read the description and look at all the photos for clarification of the style and condition of this piece and if you have any questions kindly message me.
