A VERY NICE 1913 1st WATERMARK 9d VIOLET KANGAROO SHADE SET: VIOLET; PALEVIOLET; DEEPVIOLET (LARGE OS) - 2025 CV$350
The 1st Watermark 9d Violet was printed by J.B. COOKE and issued from stock to Post Offices from 29 January 1913. It is believed they were placed on sale 1 February 1913. These marsupials were printed from two Plates (an UPPER Plate - Plate 1 and a LOWER Plate - Plate 2), each with 120-stamps-on in two Panes of 60 with each Pane in 10 Rows of six Stamps. The 9d was first used as the intrastate telegram rate; and as ‘make-up’ use for parcel rates. There were two printings on 1st Watermark paper in January 1913 and May 1914 totalling 17,160,000 stamps of which 65,520 were spoilt, leaving 17,094,480 on issue. THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH SPECIALISTS' CATALOGUE "KANGAROOS" (ACSC 2025) lists the shades of the 1st Watermark 9d Violet as:

ACSC 24A: VIOLET
ACSC 24B: PALEVIOLET
ACSC 24C: DEEPVIOLET

These 1st Watermark Kangaroos represent these shades beautifully. The DEEPVIOLET is 'LARGE OS' and as such, is quite rare in the DEEP SHADE. VERY NICE CDS SET.
