AUSTRALIA'S ICONIC 1d RED KANGAROO: A BEAUTIFUL SHADE STUDY: RED; PALERED; ROSERED; DEEPRED, CHERRY RED ANILINE & *DRY INK - GREAT COLOUR & VERY FINE (ATTRACTIVE) USED

The 1st Watermark 1d Red Kangaroo was issued on 2 January 1913 (in Sydney) and on 4 January 1913 in Melbourne. The stamp was printed from 9 PLATES (Plates A to K less I & J) in Die I, Die II & Die IIa States by J.B. COOKE. They were used as the standard letter and postcard rate within Australia and the British Empire; for commercial papers within Australia and the British Empire; and, as the magazine rate to foreign countries… Archival records indicate that six printings were made totalling 661,992,000 stamps (with 17,394,240 punctured OS). Through this massive printing effort, FOUR 'BASE SHADES' across Dies I, II and IIa have been identified as: RED, PALERED, ROSERED & DEEPRED. The 2025 ACSC has now 'standardised' the ANILINE condition across the three Die States (Die I; Die II; and Die IIa) to now read "CHERRY RED" ANILINE for all three States (ACSC 2021 was "CHERRYRED ANILINE (DIE II) and DEEPRED ANILINE (DIE IIa). The ANILINE on offer here is a DIE IIa. This study comprises:

A. RED (DIE II)
B.
PALE RED (DIE II)
C. ROSE RED (DIE DIE II)
D. DEEP RED (DIE II)
E. THE SCARCE DIE IIa CHERRY RED ANILINE
*F. 'DRY INK' (DIE II) Not yet listed (actually a very 'grainy' CONDITION showing stripped-ink palered across entire face - at end of print run).

The Australian 1d RED KANGAROO is one of the most collected stamp issues in the world. They are now over 110 years old and age has certainly not 'wearied them'. As You can see, these particular marsupials are very clean and crisp stamps with lovely colour separation across the identified shade spectrum (the DEEP RED is deeper with the 'eye'). They have been specifically selected for their general appearance, centering, postmarks, perforations and especially, colour - each one of these is a lovely representation of each shade. The CHERRY RED ANILINE here is quite striking with ANILINE colour showing through to the back. The 'DRY INK' is a very nice example with nice evenly stripped colour (towards the end of an ink-run). Selected from hundreds and hundreds of fine used reds for colour.
