1912 $100 The Bank of Montreal - Face Photographic Proof - Choice About Uncirculated, PCGS AU58.  Note date on this note is January 2nd, 1912, whereas issued notes were dated September 3rd 1912.  Possibly unique.

This photographic chartered banknote proof is from the archives of the American Banknote Company which printed many of Canada’s chartered banknotes.  In an era long before photocopiers and digital scanners, the ABN sometimes made copies of development work for new banknotes by using photographic prints.  These could be kept as clean working images of a final banknote to present to the bank officials, or could be marked with approval signatures or notes on changes to be made before going to print.  While they are photographic prints rather than intaglio printed like regular banknotes, they are rare and fascinating original artifacts from the development of their respective banknote issues.
