ORIGINAL VICTORIAN CROCODILE LEATHER PLATED GLASS HIP FLASK GNR ANTIQUE c1880
This antique flask is made from glass with a crocodile skin and plated removable cup. I'm guessing it’s silver plate but with no hallmarks to be seen I can’t say for sure.
The glass is in very good condition with no visible signs of cracks or chips and it holds fluid well.
The cup has certainly seen some use but it can still be detached and it has maintained its shape. The plating has age related wear.
The only markings are on the lid which shows the inscription GNR. This could potentially be the owners initials or maybe even Great Northern Railway? I really don’t know so perhaps I’ll leave it to you to do your own research and make your mind up.
Further markings on the underside read:
1/2 pt (pint)
14 and alongside another mark which is very hard to decipher.
As previously mentioned, the silver plating of the cup and also the lid, has worn and isn't at its best but the crocodile leather has faired much better. The flask opens and closes with ease when applying a close and twist action and repeated in reverse to open. Although the original cork is still present, if the flask was to be used I'd suggest it being replaced.
I should point out that I’m no expert and the text above is based on my own observations and research. Hopefully you will know more than me?
