Saudi Arabia 100 Halala AH1397 / 1977 Rare FAO British Royal Mint Issue not officially released for circulation, NGC Choice Uncirculated MS 64


1977 is the key date of the Saudi Arabia 100 Halala coin series.  While a small number of these coins were initially produced as first strike samples to be approved for circulation, the government ultimately decided not to issue this coin, and all struck coins were supposed to have been destroyed.  However, a very small number of coins did survive, and some have found their way into circulation and into the hands of collectors.


In 1977, the government of Saudi Arabia contracted the British Royal Mint to produce this 100 Halala coin.  The coin was to be part of a special series issued by a number of countries, where the seigniorage on the issue was supposed to be donated to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).  A few thousand coins were struck and reviewed by the Saudi government before they ultimately decided not to issue the coin. This is one of the rarest modern coins of Saudi Arabia, and a highly desirable collectible as an issue not officially released into circulation.
