Augustus (born Octavian) was Julius Caesar's great-nephew and adoptive heir. He was responsible for the formal dissolution of the Roman Republic and its rebirth as the Roman Empire, having himself declared the first emperor (taking the name Augustus). He is considered one of the greatest leaders and political minds in human history, and his empire lived on for over 450 years after his death (1400 years if the Byzantine Empire is counted).
