Born around 1840 into the wal-lam-wat-kain band of the Nez Perce, he inherited his father's unyielding commitment to their ancestral homeland and the sacred promise that "no man owns the land." When the U.S. government demanded his people's removal to a distant reservation in 1877, Joseph reluctantly prepared to comply—until violence erupted, forcing him to lead a desperate exodus of some 700 men, women, and children on an epic 1,400–1,700-mile retreat toward Canada. Outnumbered and outgunned, his band fought brilliantly in skirmishes across four states and territories, displaying remarkable strategy, humanity toward captives, and restraint even amid desperation. Cornered just shy of sanctuary in the Bear Paw Mountains, exhausted and grieving the loss of so many—chiefs, elders, warriors, and children—Joseph delivered his immortal surrender: "Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever."
