Staten Island Rapid Transit Feb 1966 Grasmere Old Town Road Ticket Transfer
Vintage Staten Island Rapid Transit Railway Company commuter ticket from February 1966. This mid-century transportation artifact contains both the passenger portion and the attached Agent's Stub separated by a vertical solid green band. The ticket was issued for unrestricted passage between New York via Municipal Ferry and Grasmere and Old Town Road.
Ultimate Geographic Keyword Powerhouse
This authentic piece of New York City transit history is a great find for Staten Island collectors. The document features important local geographical markers and transit lines including Staten Island Rapid Transit Railway Company, Grasmere, Old Town Road, New York, and Via Municipal Ferry.
Historic Line Coverage
The ticket details specific commuter regulations from the post-World War II era. It is designated as an unrestricted ticket, noting it was good for an unlimited number of rides during the month for which it was issued, subject to tariff regulations. It shows the operational connectivity between the Staten Island rail lines and the municipal ferry system feeding into Manhattan.
Specialized Specimen and Void Archival Status
A defining feature of this historical artifact is the prominent, stylized black overprint reading VOID stamped diagonally across both the passenger face and the agent stub. This explicit marking indicates that the piece was preserved as an official company file copy, salesman sample, or printer specimen rather than being distributed for public commuter use. Because it was retained for archival or reference purposes, it escaped the typical transit usage cycle, preserving a pristine layout devoid of individual passenger signatures or issued serial numbers.
Backside Advertising Masterpiece
The reverse side of this transit document is completely blank, featuring a clean, uniform bright orange paper surface with no commercial advertisements, stamps, or retail text.
Condition and Provenance
This item is part of a newly listed estate transit collection featuring decades of curated New York rail history. The ticket is in excellent vintage condition, remaining crisp with clean edges and bold green overprints reading M-FEB 1966 and VOID across the face. It features three clean circular hole punches along the bottom edge, a sharp vertical perforation line between the main ticket and the stub, and an unwritten serial number space. The signature of District Sales Manager J.W. Beatty is clearly printed at the bottom.
Historical Context
The Staten Island Rapid Transit Railway Company operated as a critical link for outer borough commuters prior to the modern integration of the MTA. This February 1966 specimen captures the line during a transitional decade for New York City infrastructure, shortly after the opening of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge which drastically altered Staten Island commuting patterns. These paper tickets document the daily routines of mid-century commuters relying on a combination of local rail and municipal ferry transit to reach their destinations.
