Centuries of weavers in northern Afghanistan have used the same diamond and triangle vocabulary you see in this Maimana, originally working from memory rather than from a paper cartoon. The result is the kind of slightly imperfect rhythm that gives a tribal kilim its character. Here, an all-over diamond grid in brick red, sage, indigo, and ivory fills the field, with no two diamonds reading the same and the surrounding triangle clusters in slightly different colour pairings on every row. The wide ivory main border carries small lozenge motifs and the outer red zigzag closes everything off. Hand woven in Pakistan from wool, in the slit-tapestry flatweave that is reversible by design. A traditional pattern, made to live with people.
