Rare Museum-Quality Art Nouveau Silver Enamel Pendant by Meyle & Mayer (c. 1910)
We are proud to offer a truly exceptional masterpiece of German Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) jewelry. This substantial pendant was crafted by the world-renowned workshop of Meyle & Mayer in Pforzheim and features a fascinating documented export history.
Design & Artistry:
The central focus is an exquisite, hand-painted enamel miniature depicting a Muse or Orientalist musician. The detail is world-class, featuring vibrant colors and genuine gold-foil accents on the instrument and garment that shimmer beautifully under light. The frame is a complex asymmetrical work of art, adorned with blue enamel flowers and delicate plique-à-jour (stained glass) enamel work.
Maker’s Marks & Export History:
• Meyle & Mayer: Fully hallmarked with the maker's signature "M" in a circle on the reverse.
• German 900 Silver: Stamped "900" on the main body.
• Documented Export: The bail (connecting ring) carries a Russian "84" zolotnik hallmark (right-facing kokoshnik, 1908-1917). This indicates the piece was officially exported to the elite Imperial Russian market shortly after its creation. Such "double-hallmarked" pieces are highly sought after as they document the historical trade routes between top European jewelers and their international clientele.
Technical Specifications:
• Weight: 45.46 grams (Extremely substantial and heavy for a pendant).
• Dimensions: Approximately 68.23 mm x 42.46 mm.
• UV Authenticity Test: Positive. The enamel exhibits a strong amber/orange glow under UV light, confirming the use of traditional gold-based pigments and 100% antique authenticity.
Condition Report:
• Central Miniature: PRISTINE condition. No cracks, chips, or restorations to the main hand-painted artwork.
• Frame & Enamel: As seen in the macro photos, there are some losses and cracks to the fragile blue and plique-à-jour enamel on the outer frame. This is consistent with the age and the extreme delicacy of this technique.
• Metalwork: Excellent antique condition with a rich, natural uncleaned patina.
