1899 Art Nouveau Bronze Plaque of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – Signed R.M. – German Medallion

Description:

Finely detailed Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) bronze plaque featuring a left-facing portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of Germany’s greatest literary figures.

The obverse presents a strong and expressive profile of Goethe, rendered in high relief with excellent craftsmanship. The piece is signed with the artist’s monogram “R.M.” for Rudolf Mayer (1846–1916). Side is marked with the maker’s mark and Bronze.

The reverse shows a striking symbolic composition: an elderly scholar seated with an open book marked by mystical symbols, facing a younger, almost spectral figure emerging through swirling, flame-like forms. This allegorical scene suggests themes of knowledge, inspiration, and the transmission of ideas—typical of the Art Nouveau period.

Rudolf Mayer (1846–1916) was an Austrian sculptor and medal artist active during the late 19th century, closely associated with the Art Nouveau / Jugendstil period in Vienna. He was known for his finely modeled portrait medals, allegorical compositions, and expressive bronze reliefs combining symbolism with exceptional craftsmanship. Mayer also worked as a sculptor on architectural and decorative commissions of the era, reflecting the rich artistic culture of fin-de-siècle Austria.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) was a German polymath who is widely regarded as the most influential writer in the German language. His work has had a wide-ranging influence on literary, political, Christian views, and philosophical thought in the Western world from the late 18th century to the present. A poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theatre-director, and critic, Goethe wrote a wide range of works, including plays, poetry and aesthetic criticism, as well as treatises on botany, anatomy, and colour.
