A LOVELY 3rd WATERMARK 2d GREY KANGAROO VARIETY STAMP: “NICK IN RIGHT FRAME NEAR TOP” 2025 ACSC 7(1)m CV$60 - GREG POPE LISTED PLATE POSITION @ 1R37
The Die I 3rd Watermark 2d GREY Kangaroo was printed in October 1915 with the 'earliest date of use' being November 1915. These marsupials were printed by J.B. COOKE until May 1918 then by T.S. HARRISON through to October 1920. They were used as the 2nd weight step rate within Australia and the British Empire (up to 27 October 1918). There were three printings made from Plates 1 (an UPPER Plate) and Plate 2 (the LOWER Plate) each with 120 stamps-on in two Panes of 60 each in 10 Rows of 6 Stamps. A further four printings were made from Plates 2 and 3 (Plate 3 was the new Die IIa Plate substituted into the Pate 1 UPPER position after Plate 1 was discarded in March 1918). In total, some 28,560,000 Die I 3rd Watermark marsupials were printed. This particular 2d GREY Kangaroo carries the 'Plated Variety' listed by the 2025 ACSC as: 1R37: “NICK IN RIGHT FRAME NEAR TOP” - CV$60.
This variety recurs at position 1R37 ... that is ... it is the 37th STAMP on the RIGHT PANE of PLATE 1 (the Upper Plate used for printing the Die I 2d Grey Kangaroo from January 1913). This one is a beautifully centered and perforated marsupial with a clean roller postmark nicely clear of the TOP RIGHT CORNER.
