This coin celebrates those who took part in the emergency response to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster. Roughly 600,000 people – soldiers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, medics, scientists, and volunteers – were involved in mitigating the consequences of the largest disaster in the history of nuclear energy. At the cost of their own health and lives, they reduced the scale of the tragedy for millions of people in Ukraine and beyond. The name of the coin echoes the title of the “To Those Who Saved the World” monument in Chornobyl. This monument was created by firefighters (designed by Ivan Symonov) in memory of their colleagues who, in the first minutes of the disaster, bore the devastating brunt of the radioactive inferno.
Obverse: there is a legend ЧОРНОБ (Chornob), where the first two letters have been stylized to resemble the number 40. This symbolically intertwines the 40-year anniversary of the tragedy with its name, while the unfinished rendering of the Ukrainian letter Б serves as a compositional bridge leading to the reverse of the coin. Above are Ukraine’s small state coat-of-arms, the legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine) and the coin’s issue year – 2026. Above, to the left, is the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works. Beneath are the coin’s face value 5 and the graphic symbol of the hryvnia.
Reverse: there is the legend БІЛЬ (pain), which thematically completes the unfinished word from the obverse. This legend serves as a reminder of the suffering caused by the Chornobyl disaster and the profound grief forever etched into our collective memory. At the top of the composition is the legend – 40 РОКІВ ЧОРНОБИЛЬСЬКОЇ КАТАСТРОФИ (The 40th Anniversary of the Chornobyl Disaster).
