π A thoughtful and genuinely meaningful gift for royalists, coin collectors, and anyone who wants to mark the start of King Charles III's reign with something permanent. The first definitive coins of a new monarch are always among the most collected. These won't be around forever. Perfect for birthdays, Christmas and commemorative occasions.
π About the coins: The 2023 King Charles III definitive coins were the first standard-issue coins of his reign to enter the British series, following the transitional 2022 issues. Both coins carry the obverse portrait of King Charles III by sculptor Martin Jennings β the first new royal portrait on British coinage since 1953, when the young Queen Elizabeth II first appeared on our coins. The portrait faces left, as tradition dictates (each monarch alternates direction from their predecessor), and is surrounded by the Latin inscription CHARLES III DΒ·GΒ·REXΒ·FΒ·D. The reverse of the 50p carries the Royal Arms design; the 5p carries the crowned Tudor rose. Together they represent the clean start of a new numismatic era.
π About King Charles III: Born 14 November 1948, King Charles Philip Arthur George became Britain's oldest-ever acceding monarch on 8 September 2022, aged 73. He had served as Prince of Wales for 64 years β longer than any other holder of that title in history. His reign began quietly, in a period of national mourning, but his coins quickly became some of the most sought-after modern British issues among collectors worldwide. These 2023 definitives mark the point at which his coinage entered everyday British life.
