Traditional Thai/Lao Khaen (Khene) Bamboo Mouth Organ –14 Pipes – Handmade
Authentic Khaen (Khene)

The traditional Thai/Lao free-reed bamboo mouth organ associated with Northeast Thailand (Isan) and Laos. Built from two rows of bamboo pipes set into a wooden windchest (air chamber) with finger holes along the pipes. Produces a distinctive reedy, harmonica/accordion-like tone, with the ability to create drone + melody textures typical of Khaen music. Length is 24" to 25" or 61 cm to 63 cm.

Origin / provenance
Purchased in Thailand as a travel keepsake approximately 20 years ago. Includes the handwritten note shown in photos (content not translated).

Traditional-style windchest sealing is visible at the joint area; classic Khaen construction is commonly sealed with wax/resin to maintain an airtight chamber not what looks like shiny, black electric tape on newer manufactured instruments.

Condition
• Natural bamboo shows normal age marks consistent with an older, handmade instrument.
• Some dry-climate checking/splitting visible on a few pipes (common with bamboo found/stored in low humidity).
