This rare and charming gilt metal box features a micro mosaic of the Colosseum of Rome on the lid. The sides are gilt metal decorated with enamel in a flowing pattern of leaves and berries.

It would have been bought in Rome as a souvenir of the Grand Tour, a rite of passage for well-to-do young men of the 17th to early 19th centuries, intended to expose them to the art, history and culture of continental Europe. This box likely dates to the first half of the 19th century.

The micro mosaic panel is in excellent condition, with no nibbles or missing tesserae. The box is in good condition, with the catch holding the lid secure. There are some signs of age to be aware of:

- There is some wear to the gilding, particularly around the edges of the lid.

- There are some minor losses to the blue enamel around the sides.

- The front right hand corner of the box sits slightly proud.

- The micro mosaic panel is slightly loose in its frame, sliding perhaps a millimetre or two from front to back when the lid is opened.  A piece of cardboard has been added inside the lid at some point to help it hold more snugly.

- The feet aren't perpendicular to the base, although the box stands neatly without a wobble.

The box measures about 4.cm long (1 3/4 inches), the same wide, and stands about 3.5 cm (1 3/8 inches) tall.
