The WonderSwan was designed by Gunpei Yokoi โ€” the Nintendo legend who created the Game Boy, the D-pad, and the Virtual Boy โ€” as his final handheld project after leaving Nintendo, launched by Bandai in 1999. It was Japan-only, runs on a single AA battery for up to 30 hours, and plays both horizontally and vertically. A fascinating piece of handheld history that never reached Western shelves.
