For followers of the Kaharingan religion, Sababuka masks are used to protect themselves from evil spirits. This mask is also used in the lalohan ritual to scare away evil spirits during the ritual journey, with the purpose of repelling enemies.
There are also art performances that use Sababuka masks, such as the Babukung dance, a dance performed in a death ceremony. The Sababuka mask is used as a spiritual intermediary, and is intended to honor the spirits of the deceased, as well as to ask permission from the spirits who inhabit various objects in this realm so as not to disturb their lives.
