The painting is based on Beggemburgers illustration of Senta from the Richard Wagner Opera “The Flying Dutchman”.
These decorated tambourines were a common feature in middle class Victorian homes where they were either hung  on a wall, or perched on an easel as a decorative ornament.
The Fishing Maid was painted by Beggemburger onto ceramic tile in 1880.
This is a variation with the addition of a ship wreck top right behind the maid.
The fisher woman or maid was a popular image in late Victorian times especially amongst the Newlyn colony. 
This is a noble image of Victorian genre which  sought to inspire and reflect.
