This Walthers Proto HO scale Express Boxcar, item 920-10847, models a wartime Troop Sleeper conversion in the C&O-style body and comes decorated for Baltimore & Ohio #1808. When passenger fleets ran short during World War II, Pullman-Standard and American Car & Foundry turned out thousands of these cars, essentially 50' boxcar bodies riding on passenger-style trucks with spartan interiors, to move service members across the country. After the war ended, railroads bought the surplus cars at bargain prices and rebuilt them for new duties.

Most of the converted cars had their interiors stripped out and their windows plated over so they could earn a living hauling less-than-carload freight and mail as express boxcars, and many stayed on the head end of passenger trains well into the 1960s. Item 920-10847 captures that prototype with a body carrying accurate rivet seams and diaphragms, high-speed passenger-style trucks, correct RP-25 metal wheels, and Proto MAX metal knuckle couplers, arriving ready to run.
