This is a rare lobolith (crinoid float) from the species Scyphocrinites elegans. Loboliths are bulbous root structures of crinoids that functioned as a buoyancy device. Unlike most crinoids that were attached to the sea floor, this type was adapted to float freely in the water column.
The lobolith was internally chambered and likely filled with gas, allowing the crinoid to regulate its position in the water and drift with ocean currents. This adaptation makes Scyphocrinites one of the most unique crinoids known.
A very interesting and collectible specimen, ideal for collectors and educational purposes.
