A RARE historical and original vintage large sized photograph of the famed Peking Legation Guard Mounted Detachment, also famously known as the “China Horse Marines”.
Written in white is "MOUNTED DETACHMENT OF U.S. MARINES AT PEIPING, CHINA". Photo dates early to mid 1930's given Peiping use. The Mounted were hand selected to serve and only 20-25 could serve at a time. There was a certain amount of pride being a Legation Guard and even more associated with being part of the Mounted. The photo shows the Detachment in their dress blues and swords in front of what I believe is the Wumen Gate of the Forbidden City.
Photo is a fabulous large size measures 14” x 12” and is mounted to a piece of album paper. Has wrinkles and some small tears within the margins.
The other photos are for China Marine reference only, only the photo is offered at auction. I wrote the forward to the shown book "CHINA HORSE MARINE" by my friend Richard Bonham. A must have for any China Marine collector.
