This 2023 issue $50 fine silver Coronation coin commemorates one of the most memorable and iconic moments in the more than 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin is double dated 1952-2022 marking the years of Her Majesty’s reign which helped to define an era of change and modernization for both the monarchy and the world. Mintage is limited to just 1,750 coins. HST/GST exempt.

 

The design features Her Majesty as she appeared at her coronation on June 2, 1953. She is seen enthroned at Westminster Abbey wearing Saint Edward’s Crown, which is traditionally used only for the moment of crowning. Versions of St. Edward’s Crown have been used to crown English and British monarchs at their coronations since the 11th century. The current crown was made in 1661 for King Charles II. The young queen holds the Royal Scepter, which is a longstanding symbol of office. Her Majesty also holds the Sovereign’s Orb topped with a cross, representing her ceremonial role as the head of the Church of England.

The obverse features a new tribute design combining the four effigies of Queen Elizabeth that have graced Canadian coinage since her coronation in 1953. The effigies span from the first young Queen design introduced in 1953 through to the most recent effigy used through her Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
