The K&M Railroad was commonly referred to as the "Bridge Line to the Lakes". It was chartered in 1890. In 1893, the line was extended to Gauley Bridge in Fayette county from Charleston. In 1910, the C&O bought control of the K&M. They planned to use it to lease the line to the New York Central System. This line later became part of the NYC. This line is commonly referred to as the West Virginia Secondary, given while under Conrail control. This line was originally the Kanawha and Ohio Railroad, but was re-organized as the Kanawha and Michigan Railway in 1893. The K&M was controlled by the Toledo and Ohio Central Railway Company between 1903 and 1910. The K&M was merged with the Toledo & Ohio Central in 1938, and then it was merged with the NYC in 1952.
