intriguing story of Marco Polo’s epic journey from 1271 to 1295. The base coin features an antique finish,
while five additional 24 kt gold plated puzzle pieces inlay into the base coin
adding five more panels to tell the story of Marco Polo. The puzzle pieces feature significant stages
of his journey, from his departure in Venice to the Holy Land, the Silk Road to
China, his service with Emperor Khan, and his struggles at sea, while the base
coin illustrates the route, accompanied by an image of Marco Polo.
The coin was issued by Djibouti with a mintage
of just 500 coins. It comes with a
certificate of authenticity and is presented in an attractive compass shaped
display case. HST/GST exempt.
Marco Polo was a Venetian
merchant who lived from 1254 to 1324. He
was an explorer and writer who most famously travelled through Asia along the
Silk Road between 1271 and 1295. His travels are recorded in The Travels of
Marco Polo (also known as Book of the Marvels of the World and Il Milione,
c. 1300), a book that described the then-mysterious culture and inner workings
of the Eastern world, including the wealth and great size of the Mongol Empire
and China under the Yuan dynasty. Marco
Polo’s experience and writings provided Europeans with their first
comprehensive look into China, Persia, India, Japan, and other Asian societies.
