Zeolite is a natural, porous volcanic mineral which absorbs toxic ammonia from the water, through an ion exchange. It acts as a mechanical and biological filter media, trapping solids and removing nutrients that cause algae growth, making it ideal for managing a new pond or for emergency ammonia spikes.
- Ammonia Removal (Ion Exchange): Zeolite has a strong negative charge that attracts and binds positively charged ammonia moleculesIt effectively "soaks up" ammonia, which is the leading cause of fish death.
- Absorption and Filtration: Due to its porous, molecular structure, zeolite acts as a filter media to trap suspended solids and reduce organic pollutants, improving water clarity, color, and odour.
- Algae Control: By removing nitrogen-based nutrients from the water, it starves algae, including string algae, aiding in clearer water.
- Rechargeable: Once saturated with ammonia, zeolite can be regenerated by soaking it in a strong salt solution to release the ammonia and recharge the stone.
Important Considerations
- Salt Incompatibility: If you add salt to your pond for fish medication, the zeolite will release all the stored ammonia back into the water.
- Freshwater Only: It is not suitable for marine or brackish water systems.
- Temporary Solution: It is best used as a temporary aid to reduce high ammonia levels while a biological filter becomes established, rather than a permanent replacement for a filter.
500g will treat around 500ltrs and should be removed and re-charged every 3 months.
Always clean lightly with pond /tank water to avoid removing existing bacteria colonies.
