Michael Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix for the Jordan team, replacing the arrested Bertrand Gachot. Despite retiring on the first lap with clutch failure, his impressive performance in qualifying, where he put the car seventh on the grid, caught the attention of other teams. He was quickly signed by the Benetton-Ford team and secured his first points in the following race at Monza

Phil Hill driving for Ferrari won his first and only Drivers' Championship after his teammate and rival Wolfgang von Trips was killed during the Italian Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the season.Hill was the first American-born champion (and, so far, the only one, because 1978 champion Mario Andretti was born in Italy). Ferrari won its first Manufacturers' Championship.
