Up for sale is a small but delightful, and very fanciful, piece of original textile art, a "Batik" showing several mushrooms (or toadstools). It was created by New Orleans, Louisiana artist Edith Cummins, who was nationally recognized as a batik artist.
The entire framed piece measures about 11.25 inches wide by about 9.25 inches tall. The actual batik image sits behind glass and is surrounded by an olive green mat. The fabric of the image is on a white background. The actual dimensions of the batik image alone are about 5.75 inches wide by about 3.75 inches tall. On the back of the piece, applied to the framer's brown paper is a large label in which the artist explains the method of creating a batik. She also provides a single sentence biographical statement. Also found on this side are her address label (in New Orleans) and a label from the custom framer.
The following information about artist Edith Cummins (1931 - 2021) is obtained from her obituary. She was born in Germany and, after World War II, emigrated first to Sweden and then to the United States in the 1950s. She worked in medical research at Johns Hopkins where she met her husband, Gayle. They moved to New Orleans in 1960, where she worked at the Touro Infirmary (Hospital). Later on, she became a massage therapist, including at the 1992 track and field finals for the United States Olympic Team. Cummins was a New Orleans fixture, known as the "Cookie Lady" at the French Market. As a sidelight, she was a disco dance instructor with Arthur Murray Studios. As an artist who specialized in batik art, she was recognized by the National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington, D.C. Late in life, she moved to Pittsboro, North Carolina where she passed at the age of 90.
This work was framed by FLOT Custom Framing, Inc., an African-American owned business. According to her obituary, co-founder Dorothy Mae Williams Flot was a native, and life long resident, of the Crescent City. She died in 2013.
