BIOGRAPHY:

Former Evans City Resident Charles Ripper Painted Wildlife on Colorful Postage Stamps. The colorful wildlife stamps are now on sale at the post office here and across the nation are selling extremely well. Previously, Ripper painted the 1980 four-stamp Coral Reef block for the U. S. Postal Service and the Louisiana World Exposition issue of 1984... Ripper's Wildlife illustrations can be seen on bank checks, greeting cards, puzzles, outdoor magazines and L.L. Bean catalogues. A Peterson outdoor guide "A Field Guide to the Wildflowers" contains 1,500 drawings by Ripper. Named after his grandfather, Charles Lewis Ripper was born in Pittsburgh and spent his childhood in Evans City, PA, and attended school there. The only son of Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Ripper, he grew up in a family of artists. His father was an ornamental ironworker by profession and, along with his brother Dan, shaped the fancy ironwork for the T. W. Phillips Gas & Oil Co. building in downtown Butler. His father also painted landscapes. His mother, Hazel, was an art teacher at Evans City High School, was also a well-known Butler County artist. The year 1953 was a busy year for him. He married Virginia Ogle of Waynes, MO, wrote and illustrated his first book, "Bats" for William Morrow of New York, and joined a printing and publishing company in Huntington, W. Va. as art director.
