The Cuban Poster Gallery is pleased to offer "CUBA POSTCASTRO," a rarely seen hand-signed and numbered Cuban screen-printed poster designed in 2008, the year Fidel Castro turned over the Cuban presidency to his brother Raul. Only 50 copies were made for the original edition of this poster, which was designed by the award-winning Cuban painter, illustrator and graphic artist Arístides Hernández (known as ARES). ARES told us the poster was inspired by another poster created on January 1, 1959, the day Castro's revolution triumphed.
This listing also includes a well-used copy of GRANMA, Cuba's official Communist party newspaper that displayed the artwork on ARES's poster on its cover. The historic 16-page Spanish language tabloid newspaper, dated November 27, 2016, contained the official obituary of Fidel Castro's death two days earlier on November 25, 2016. The front-page headline in the newspaper: Cuba es Fidel (Cuba Is Fidel). The newspaper also contains articles about Castro's life and details about his funeral.
The bold 27- by 19-inch limited-edition Pop Art ARES poster in this listing addresses a subject that in 2008 (the year the poster was printed) was rarely discussed in public in Cuba: What will happen on the island after Fidel Castro dies? We acquired this graphic directly from ARES a few weeks before Castro's death in Havana on Nov. 25, 2016.
ARES told us his inspiration for this graphic came from an image of a young Fidel Castro, wearing his trademark beard and green fatigues, that appeared on a poster designed by another well-known Cuban artist (Eladio Rivadulla) on Jan. 1, 1959, the first day of the Cuban revolution.
In a nod to Andy Warhol, ARES decided to reproduce that identical image of Castro multiple (in fact, dozens of) times on his poster. The artist told us the poster was intended to provoke discussion -- not to suggest necessarily that Cuba, post-Castro, would be ruled by a clone of Fidel Castro.
"My view is that Cuba post-Fidel will be full of young people who are about the same age Fidel was when he came to power," ARES told us in the fall of 2016. "When Fidel is gone, these young people will bring -- with a revolutionary spirit -- new ideas to Cuba." Of course, historians will be the final judge on whether that outcome was achieved.
In addition to this cutting-edge poster art, ARES has published 18 books and illustrated 170 others, winning more than 125 awards in Europe, the Americas and Middle East. Fun fact: ARES also has a medical degree with a specialty in psychiatry. A few words about collecting Cuba's silk-screen movie posters, which we also offer in our eBay Store:
For more than 60 years, the Cuban Film Institute has been designing silk-screened posters for most every movie shown on the island, whether the films originated in Cuba, the United States, Brazil, Japan or Italy. In the midst of the Cold War 1960s and 1970s, many of the subtitled foreign films shown in Cuba came from the island nation's communist allies in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Vietnam and even North Korea.
Unlike in the United States, where movie posters are often dominated by images of Hollywood stars, the Cubans assign a graphic artist to design an original piece of artwork for each film. These posters are widely recognized in graphic design circles as stylish works of art, handmade one color at a time and often under difficult circumstances (at various times, paint and even paper have been in short supply on the island.)
Cuba's silk-screen movie posters are nothing less than museum pieces. But don't take our word for it! Examples of Cuban poster art can be found in the permanent collections of museums across the globe from the Victoria & Albert in London to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as in prestigious institutions such as the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles.
Adding to their collectability, Cuba's movie posters are produced in relatively small numbers. Typically, a few hundred copies are made for each film, although the runs have been as low as 50. Responding to demand from collectors, the Cuban Film Institute has re-screened some of its more popular posters. That's why some posters created in the 1960s and 1970s began reappearing on the Caribbean island in the 1990s and 2000s.
