On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique map "British America, Comprehending Canada, Labrador, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia &c." Offered with early hand outline colour. 

A fine 1799 map by Samuel Neele for the English map publisher Clement Cruttwell. The map is centered on Hudson Bay, it depicts territory from the Arctic Ocean and Baffin Bay down to the Great Lakes, and from the Great Slave Lake (labeled as Arathapescow Lake) to the Grand Banks. Includes details on indigenous cultures, climates, and river navigability and the explorations of Samuel Hearne along the Coppermine River.

SIZE: The printed area of the view, including titles, is approximately 39 x 35.5 cm, 15.5 x 14 inches (medium) plus margins with a centre fold as issued.

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Map engraved by Neele. Samuel John Neele (1758-1824) was a notable engraver.

PROVENANCE:  Published by G. G. and J. Robinson of Paternoster Row, London, for Clement Cruttwell's 1799 Atlas to Cruttwell's Gazetteer. Clement Cruttwell (1743–1808), a Bath-based Anglican Reverend known for producing extensive geographical works.

TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side which is blank.

CONDITION: Poor; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian paper is subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated.  Split at the bottom of the centre fold and unfortunately an old crude tape repair exists on this split. Priced accordingly.
