MONIX

A nice French art deco desk lamp in gilded solid brass or bronze made around 1930/ ‘Monix’ was the brand name of  Maxime Lokiec (1888-1940). Les Etablissements Lokiec was a Paris based company (38-40 rue de la Folie Méricourt). Almost nothing is known about this company. Here the little I learned searching the National Archives as well as my Monix product catalogs. In the mid 30s Maxime Lokiec, from Jewish Polish origin, changed his name into Loquet. He started his company in bronze lighting devices around 1920. The company closed its doors in 1980. In 1922 a patent was registered for a spring braked ball joint which is used in most Monix models. After the war the company re-opened and modernized (higher volumes, cheaper made lamps) making modernist lamps in pressed brass in a rather impersonal style.

The lamp on offer is about 30 cm high in its highest position. The heavy base has a diameter of 15,5 cm. The lamp is presented in the 1930 Lokiec product catalog. The bronze base has a cast iron inlay covered by a round metal plate with green felt. The finely detailed bronze holds its original gold plating. The lamp is in very good condition given its age. I cleaned it a little and it comes wired with cloth covered twisted cord. Its original zeppelin switch and a new plug. It is wired with an American candelabra base socket and 2-prong plug. For European countries I will place a E14 socket.
