16th-17th century, the period of the Spanish treasure ships. Spanish form with dramatic clipped point. Small example, just over 5 5/8” (5.59”) total length. The base mounted with the axle with partial suspension ring intact. Broad blade of elegant leaf shape and wedge section, with large decorative motif to the right, possibly Islamic calligraphy. It is well documented that pirate crews included Ottoman as well as African members. Sailors of the period were prohibited from owning knives with points to prevent fights and mutinies. This example belonged to a pirate who was a free man among a band of equals. It is a weapon of fighting weight, not a utility knife. Sound excavated condition with good profile. Florida find purchased in a Fort Myers dive shop about 1980.
