The Lost Daughter is a critically acclaimed 2021 psychological drama written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal in her directorial debut, based on Elena Ferrante's 2006 novel of the same name.
The film stars Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Dagmara Domińczyk, Jack Farthing, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Peter Sarsgaard and Ed Harris. Colman also serves as an executive producer on the film. The film is about Leda (Colman), who observes a young mother and her daughter on the beach during a seaside vacation and falls in love with them. When a small, seemingly insignificant event occurs, Leda is overwhelmed by memories of the difficult, unconventional decisions she made as a mother and their consequences for herself and her family. The seemingly cheerful story about a woman's pleasant rediscovery soon becomes the story of a violent confrontation with an unresolved past.
"The Lost Daughter" premiered at the 78th. premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where Gyllenhaal won the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay. At its world premiere on opening night, the film received a four-minute standing ovation from Venice Film Festival attendees. The film also received three nominations at the 94th. Academy Awards for Best Actress (Colman), Best Supporting Actress (Buckley) and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The film music was composed by Dickon Hinchliffe, founding member of the Tindersticks. Dickon's unique composition and arrangement style developed from his classical violin studies and writing and recording songs in bands.
"The Lost Daughter" is available in a limited "peal it like a snake, don't let it break" edition of 750 individually numbered copies on orange marbled vinyl. The LP features alternative artwork designed by Yelena Yemchuk, a professional Ukrainian photographer, painter and film director best known for her work with the Smashing Pumpkins. The vinyl packaging includes an insert with images and liner notes by Maggie Gyllenhaal and Dickon Hinchliffe.
