This is a well known image of the “Norman Gateway at Windsor Castle”

Painted and etched by Herbert Railton 1857-1910.

Produced around 1886.

There are figures in the foreground wearing period costume.

It is a hand pulled copper plate etching on paper.

This view shows the entrance to the Upper Ward of the castle.

Herbert was born near Blackpool and educated at Mechlin in Belgium and Ampleforth

He trained as an architect in Blackburn and joined the local literary club where he met Charles Haworth who became his artistic mentor.

His drawing of a railway accident at Blackburn station in 1888 was published in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News.

This launched his career as an illustrator, one of the leaders of his day.

He illustrated many books by such famous writers as Oliver Goldsmith, Henry Fielding, Samuel Johnson and travel guides.

This etching on paper measures 27.4 x  21.5 CM

The image measures 21.5 x 16 cm

The plate border measures 24 x 18.5 cm

It is adhered along the top edge to cartridge paper measuring 42.5 x 30.8 cm

Good clean clear print.

No foxing.

Some minor snags to the edge of the backing paper and a little grubby marks. All of no consequence

Your picture will be sent with UPS. It will be flat packed between polystyrene sheets, card,  and wrapped in brown paper

UPS we find are more sensitive to fragile objects, but the additional cost is well worth it.
